Swarkestone Bridge - Causeway in danger

Swarkestone Causeway (also known as the Stanton Causeway) is a "bridge" built in the 14th century. It is located in South Derbyshire, 5 miles south of Derby, and is nearly one mile in length. It was built to traverse the flood plain of the River Trent. At the north of the Causeway is an elegant Georgian bridge that spans the River Trent itself. The Causeway is the longest stone bridge in England.

This Grade One Ancient Monument is being daily battered by cars, buses, vans and in particular by heavy lorries. By law no vehicle over 7.5 tons is allowed on the bridge but this law is being flouted. In the autumn/winter of 2004 the causeway was badly damaged on 4 occasions. In early 2007 there were 5 areas of damage to the structure caused by vehicles. The situation has not improved.

This site has been established to protect the Causeway by raising public awareness to its declining condition.
