View of Collina d'Oro

A view of the Collina d'Oro (Walk 1)

Aims and Objectives
The aim was to produce a series of walks in areas where Hesse most probably walked and painted. The walks were to be accessible by public transport from Lugano and not be too strenuous.

Nature of Walks
The walks are no more than 8 miles in length and where a mountain railway or cable car was available this was used to reach the highest point. They mostly use well made and marked footpaths. In places it was necessary, however, to follow public roads. They were all undertaken in July 2002 during very good weather so I do not know how they would "walk" in spring, autumn or winter conditions.

Timings
All timings in the walks must be taken with caution. They are based on my walking rate which is *considerably slower* than the timings on Swiss foothpath signs! They do not include break times (which were frequent) but do include time for taking photographs and reading maps.

Ticino
Ticino is an Italian speaking area of Switzerland on the border with Italy. It is the sunniest part of Switzerland and has a much warmer climate than the rest of the country. As with the rest of Switzerland, it is expensive for UK tourists to stay, eat and drink here.

Feedback
These walks I hope will one day be published in book form. For the time being I hope that readers will comment on them and even use them! I have no doubt made errors of direction and timing. If readers have any walks of their own I would be glad to include them here or , if it happens, in a future publication. Suggestions on how to improve these walks or comments on Hesse literary connections with locations would be most welcome. I hope to add some more walks next year if I can afford it!
